9. Important People in Our Lives: “The Kind of Person I’d Like to Be”

November ’92

The following is a conversation between Mitchell and his grandfather George Gibbs.

Grandpa: I have to say to you that one of the happiest days of my life was the day you were born. I felt so excited and so exhilarated to have a grandson that it really meant an awful lot to me. And since that time, we have had such a great relationship all through the years, from the time that you started to walk to the time you started school, all the way through.

I think that our relationship has expanded a lot now, since you started Walter Panas [High School] and we started to study together. Do you remember the time we did American history?

Mitchell: Oh yes, I surely did. From what I can remember, I think it started from before when I was at Panas. Because sometimes before I started going to Panas that I used to go over to your house and we would go upstairs into the kitchen and you had helped me to study for my big exams or big tests that I may have and you always do that every time when I was in school.

Remember when we were studying together, whenever I misspell a word, you tell me to spell it correctly. . . . “Don’t spell it wrong, spell it right!”

Grandpa: And I made you rewrite it. We did have some interesting times. We even had a few arguments, didn’t we? During the study of American history and economics. Remember that?

Now discussions have evolved into other topics, such as politics, which I know you’re interested in. . . .

Mitchell: We talk about other things as well, like what I’m doing with myself, all the activities I’ve been doing, my job situation. We talk about many things. . . .

Grandpa: Getting back to politics—even though our thinking has always been more conservative, yours and mine, but now that we have a new president-elect, what’s your opinion about him? Do you think he’ll be able to handle the job?

Mitchell: From my perspective, I think Bill Clinton is more than capable of handling the world affairs. To me . . . he has the experience and the qualifications. In any case, I do feel that Clinton is the right person for the job.

Grandpa: Speaking about jobs, I think we both think that the major problem right now is to create more jobs. . . .

Mitchell: Yes. That’s one of the issues. . . . We need to exist by having trade with other countries. If we start having . . . more free trade, then we can start creating new jobs for us.
